Beyond Politics
Dany Morin
Catherine Clark spoke to Dany Morin about his life Beyond Politics. NDP MP Dany Morin didn't expect he would be elected in 2011, after all the riding had been a solid Bloc riding since 2004 and before that was the stronghold of André Harvey, who held the riding first as a PC, then as an Independent, and finally as a Liberal. The NDP never finished higher than third. But with the orange wave engulfing Quebec, Morin found himself on the morning of May 3 as the sitting MP for Chicoutimi-Le Fjord. The eldest of two children, Morin grew up in a household where politics never played a prominent role, but in the back of his mind he always thought that he could play a role -- but not until his 50s. In high school, Morin heard about Jack Layton who had just been elected leader of the NDP. Morin liked what he heard so he bought a membership and quietly supported the party until 2011, when he was approached to be a candidate in the riding. By then, Morin had been in business for a year as a licensed chiropractor and didn't think he had a realistic chance of winning, but he did. Outspoken on the issue of bullying, Morin has made a name for himself in the short time he has been in Ottawa.
