Beyond Politics
Rick Norlock
Catherine Clark spoke to Rick Norlock about his life Beyond Politics. Conservative MP Rick Norlock was born in the Northern Ontario community of Chapleau where his father worked as a lumberjack. The idea of taking his family along as he moved from camp to camp didn't appeal to Mr. Norlock's father, so he found a job at a magnesium mine further south in the Ottawa Valley community of Renfrew. The first of six children, Mr. Norlock was destined for the priesthood, but preferred working at the local A&P grocery store. At the suggestion of the local OPP, Mr. Norlock submitted an application to join the force. He was accepted and was stationed yet further south down the Ottawa Valley in Hawkesbury. It was there where Mr. Norlock met his future wife Judy and together they had two children, both boys, one of whom , James, followed his father's footsteps into the OPP and the other, Matthew, is working as a wildlife manager in British Columbia. After 30 years of service, Mr Norlock retired from the force and in 2000 the Canadian Alliance asked him to run as their candidate in Northumberland–Quinte West. Mr. Norlock didn't win but in 2006 under the banner of Stephen Harper's Conservatives, he did win, defeating the Liberal incumbent by over 3,000 votes.
