Darrell Dexter
Catherine Clark spoke to Darrell Dexter in Halifax about his life Beyond Politics. Nova Scotia Premier Darrell Dexter was born in Halifax but grew up in Milton on the province's South Shore. His father was a second world war veteran and a sheet metal worker who encouraged Darrell to pursue his studies. Mr. Dexter took a degree in journalism and worked as a reporter for The Daily News in the 1980's and then served as a Command Information Officer for Maritime Forces Pacific as a sub-lieutenant on the HCMS Yukon. He is also the holder of a law degree from Dalhousie and practised law for several years in Halifax before entering public life. In 1998, he was elected as the MLA for Cole Harbour and in 2002 was elected party leader with over 63% of the vote. In 2009, Mr. Dexter was elected Premier, the first New Democrat in the province's history. Married to wife Kelly Wilson, together they have one son, Harris.
