Gary Goodyear
Catherine Clark spoke to Gary Goodyear about his life Beyond Politics. Minister of State for Science and Technology Gary Goodyear grew up in the community of Preston, Ontario, now known as Cambridge. Mr. Goodyear grew up in a large family, six children, and landed his first job when he was only 12, working on an asphalt road crew. Mr. Goodyear studied auto mechanics when he was in high school, finishing second in a province-wide troubleshooting contest sponsored by Chrysler. But Mr. Goodyear dreamt of bigger and better things and enrolled in night courses to qualify for post-secondary studies. Mr. Goodyear attended the University of Waterloo and graduated as a Doctor of Chiropractic Medicine from Toronto's Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College. After twenty years practicing in Cambridge, Mr. Goodyear was approached to run in the 2004 federal election. After trailing most of the night, Mr. Goodyear won with a margin of only 224 votes. In 2009, Prime Minister Stephen Harper appointed Mr. Goodyear to cabinet. Mr. Goodyear married his high school sweetheart, Valerie and together they have two children.
