2013 Byelection – Provencher
CPAC's Alan Waterman reports on the by-election in Provencher, Man. Provencher may be best known among historians for the 1873 election of Louis Riel, but most recently it was represented by former public safety minister Vic Toews, who stepped down in July 2013. Hoping to capitalize on the riding's predilection for returning Conservative candidates with sizable pluralities (Toews won by over 20,000 votes in 2011) is Ted Falk, president of the Steinbach Credit Union and Diamond Construction. Running for the NDP, who finished second in 2011, is Natalie Courcelles Beaudry, an assistant to NDP MLA Ron Lemieux and a former parliamentary page. Terry Hayward, who finished third in 2011, is returning to run for the Liberals. Hayward, a farmer from Anola, is a retired former public servant. Janine Gibson, the past president of the Canadian Organic Growers Association, is running for the Green party.
