Ontario 2018 Provincial Election
CPAC’s Sean Mallen takes a look at the campaign in Ontario, where the Liberals under Kathleen Wynne are attempting to win their fifth straight electoral victory. The province’s economy is robust and unemployment numbers are the lowest they have been in 16 years and yet there is a strong appetite for change in Canada’s most populous province. The two main opposition leaders, Doug Ford of the Progressive Conservatives and Andrea Horwath of the NDP, have been trying to capitalize on the desire for change and have been focusing on issues such as the province’s high hydroelectricity rates, among the highest in North America; high public debt, which is at $337B; and hallway medicine, the term used to emphasize the province’s problems with hospital overcrowding. As with most political campaigns these days, much of the conversation is on the personality of the leaders, and in the end, it may become the overriding factor for Ontario's voters. Election day is June 7.
