90th Anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge
Host Martin Stringer introduces CPAC footage of ceremonies held on April 9, 2007, in commemoration of the 90th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge. Canadians played a key role in the Battle of Vimy Ridge (April 9–12, 1917), which marked an historic Allied victory against German forces when Canadian Corps soldiers captured Hill 145, located between Vimy and the Givenchy-en-Gohelle region in France. In the first half of the program, ceremonies are shown from the Canadian National Vimy Memorial in Vimy, France. Proceedings include the rededication of the Canadian National Vimy memorial site after completion of an extensive restoration project. Among those in attendance are Queen Elizabeth II, French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, former Canadian governor general Adrienne Clarkson, war veterans, and Canadian high school students. Later, ceremonies are shown from the National War Memorial in Ottawa, Ont. In attendance are Governor General Michaëlle Jean and Minister of National Defence Gordon O’Connor.
