100th Anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge – Ceremony in Ottawa

A ceremony is held at the National War Memorial in Ottawa on April 9, 2017, commemorating the hundredth anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge. Fifteen thousand Canadian soldiers fought in the First World War battle to capture the ridge, with fighting lasting from April 9 until April 12, 1917. More than 3,500 Canadians died and another 7,000 were wounded in the battle. The Canadians’ victory at Vimy is now considered to be a defining moment in the country’s history.
