Joint Committee on the Constitution – The Government Response
CPAC presents key debates and testimony from the 1980–81 Special Joint Committee on the Constitution of Canada. In this episode, we look at the federal government’s response to the work of the special committee. Adam Dodek, a professor of law at the University of Ottawa, joins host Peter Van Dusen to provide historical analysis. On January 12, 1981, Justice Minister Jean Chrétien appears before the committee to propose a number of amendments to the government’s proposed constitutional resolution. On January 30, 1981, Peter Ittinuar (the Liberal MP for Nunatsiaq, N.W.T.) introduces a government-backed amendment aimed at strengthening indigenous rights within the proposed Constitution.
