Quebec MP Maxime Bernier announces he is no longer a member of the Conservative Party of Canada and plans to form a new political party. He says the party has abandoned its core conservative principles and that it is "too intellectually and morally corrupt to be reformed". His news conference on Parliament Hill comes as the Conservative party convention is set to get underway in Halifax. Bernier has been the focus of controversy in recent days over his tweets concerning the federal government’s policies on immigration and multiculturalism. (August 23, 2018)
