Canada to Expand Peacekeeping Role
In a news conference at CFB Bagotville, Que., on August 26, 2016, Foreign Affairs Minister Stéphane Dion, Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan, Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale, and International Development Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau announce an expansion of Canada’s commitment to overseas peacekeeping activities. Canada is promising to deploy up to 600 soldiers in future United Nations peacekeeping missions. It will also invest $450 million in the new Peace and Stabilization Operations Program (PSOPS), which will focus on conflict-prevention measures.
