Svend Robinson Marks 25th Anniversary of Sue Rodriguez's Death
Svend Robinson, former New Democrat MP and the current NDP candidate in Burnaby North-Seymour, B.C., holds a news conference on Parliament Hill calling on the federal government to amend Canada's assisted-dying law before the next election. Canada's assisted-dying law came into force in June 2016. The news conference comes on the 25th anniversary of the death of Sue Rodriguez, his close friend and a right-to-die advocate. Rodriguez was diagnosed with the terminal disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in 1991. She argued that the law prohibiting assisted suicide was unconstitutional, but lost her Supreme Court appeal. Robinson was present when she died at her home in 1994 with the help of a doctor.
