In Committee from the House of Commons
Subcommittee on International Human Rights - May 19, 2016
The subcommittee resumes its study on the current human rights situation of the Rohingya in Myanmar (also known as Burma). The Rohingya are a Muslim ethnic minority group living in the state of Rakhine, near Myanmar's border with Bangladesh. The vast majority of the Rohingya are not officially recognized by the government of Myanmar as citizens of the country. MPs hear from Rebecca Wolsak and Kevin Malseed (two program managers with Inter Pares), Alex Neve (secretary general of Amnesty International Canada) and Abid Bahar (Dawson College professor, as an individual).
