The commitee began their study on the management of the grey seal population off Canada’s east coast.

The witnesses from Fisheries and Oceans Canada were David Balfour (senior assistant deputy minister, Ecosystems and Fisheries Management), Siddika Mithani (assistant deputy minister, Ecosystems and Oceans Science Sector) and Patrice Simon (Environment and Biodiversity Science).

The most recent assessment from 2010 estimates the population at 349,000 animals.
