Senators discussed Canada's involvement in the combat missions in Libya and in Afghanistan during two separate panels. Lieutenant-General Charles Bouchard, the Canadian commander who was in charge of the NATO-led mission in Libya, provided an overview of the seven-month military operation and lessons learned. Major-General Jonathan Vance, director of staff for the Strategic Joint Staff, and diplomat Marius Grinius also testified. Committee members then turned their attention to Canadian forces' efforts in Afghanistan. Lieutenant-General Stuart Beare, commander of Canadian Expeditionary Force Command, discussed the combat operation in Afghanistan as well as the transition to a training mission. Major-General Jonathan Vance was again on hand to answer questions.
