Representatives from the Lac La Ronge Indian Band, the Canadian Bar Association and the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs testified as senators continued their consideration of Bill S-6, the First Nations Elections Act. One key change is the extension of the terms of office for chiefs and councils. Chief Tammy Cook-Searson of the Lac La Ronge Indian Band, Aimée E. Craft, chair of the National Aboriginal Law Section for the Canadian Bar Association, and Grand Chief Derek Nepinak of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs discussed their concerns with the bill and outlined recommendations for improvement.
