Committee members continue their study of Canada’s energy sector, focusing on the establishment of a strategic framework for sustainable development.

Peter Taptuna (the Nunavut energy minister) and Robert Long (Nunavut’s deputy minister of economic development and transportation) appear before the committee. The witnesses discuss Nunavut’s reliance on diesel for all of its energy needs, the lack of an electrical grid in the territory, the slow process of developing hydroelectric power, and the need to develop Nunavut’s vast natural gas and oil resources. They are questioned by committee members Grant Mitchell (the deputy chair of the committee), Dennis Patterson (Conservative), Daniel Lang (Conservative), John D. Wallace (Conservative), Richard Neufeld (Conservative), Judith Seidman (Conservative), Bert Brown (Conservative), Robert W. Peterson (Liberal), and Nancy Greene Raine (Conservative).
