Aboriginal Peoples – March 28, 2012
Officials from Statistics Canada and from Human Resources and Skills Development Canada testified as part of the committee's study of the evolving legal and political recognition of the collective identity and rights of the Métis in Canada. Jane Badets, a director general at Statistics Canada, discussed the data that the department collects on this aboriginal group. Information from her presentation was based on 2006 census and the 2006 Aboriginal Peoples Survey. James Sutherland, an acting director general with the Aboriginal Affairs Directorate at HRSDC, spoke about partnerships with Métis organizations and the labour market programs and services that are available.
