In Committee from the Senate of Canada
National Finance – April 4, 2012
Representatives from the Canadian publishing industry discussed disparities in book pricing as the committee continued its special study of Canada-U.S. price discrepancies. Books are one of the few consumer goods with dual prices printed on the product label. Canadian Publishers' Council representatives Jackie Hushion and Kevin Hanson, Carolyn Wood from the Association of Canadian Publishers, and James Reeve of Nelson Education Ltd. responded to questions about import regulations which allow for a ten percent markup over American book prices. In 1999, the federal government implemented provisions in the Canadian Copyright Act in order to protect the publishing industry in Canada.
