The committee elects Senator Larry Smith (Conservative) as deputy chair of the committee, replacing Senator Richard Neufeld (Conservative).

Committee members then resume their study of government expenditures set out in the main estimates for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2013. Department of Justice officials Donald Piragoff, Daniel Schnob, and Joel Oliver appear before the committee, discussing their department’s budget estimates for the year. The witnesses are questioned by senators Joseph A. Day (the chair of the committee), Nancy Ruth (Conservative), Catherine S. Callbeck (Liberal), Carolyn Stewart Olsen (Conservative), Bob Runciman (Conservative), Pierrette Ringuette (Liberal), JoAnne L. Buth (Conservative), Irving Gerstein (Conservative), and Robert W. Peterson (Liberal).
