David Wilkes and Karen Proud of the Retail Council of Canada spoke about research and innovation efforts in the agricultural sector from a retailer’s perspective. The witnesses discussed changes in the packaging of various foods, the development of healthier alternatives, and a number of programs run by the council to help educate its members. Mike Nowosad and Sue Walker from the Canadian 4-H Council outlined the role of their organization, and the programs offered to youth interested in being a part of the agriculture industry. Johanne Ross of Agriculture in the Classroom – Manitoba spoke about the lack of agriculture in the Canadian school curriculum, and how her organization helps youth learn about the industry.
