Senior government officials discussed various measures of the budget implementation bill (C-38), including those pertaining to the Canada Health Act and the Fisheries Act.

Officials from Public Safety spoke about changes to the Canada Health Act which would affect the way members of the RCMP access health care, as well as the elimination of CSIS’s inspector general position.

Senators then heard from representatives from the Department of Finance on removing the penny from circulation and changes to the Federal-Provincial Fiscal Arrangements Act. Representatives from Fisheries and Oceans Canada elaborated on the proposed expansion of ministerial powers in the Fisheries Act.

UPDATE: Bill C-38 received royal assent on June 29.
