In Committee from the Senate of Canada - Agriculture and Forestry – June 21, 2012

Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz spoke to senators about the government's new Safe Food for Canadians Act. Bill S-11 provides the food industry with clearer inspection and enforcement rules. The Act will also implement tougher fines for activities that put Canada's food safety system at risk.

Dr. Brian Evans, Canada's chief food safety officer, and Colleen Barnes, a senior official with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, also testified.

UPDATE: Bill S-11 received royal assent on November 22.
