In Committee from the Senate of Canada
Social Affairs, Science and Technology - May 2, 2013
Social Affairs, Science and Technology Senators hear from a group of immigration lawyers as they continue their consideration of the government's controversial legislation to speed up the deportation of refugees, permanent residents and visitors for "serious criminality". Bill C-43 also gives Immigration Minister Jason Kenney a new authority to decide who can or cannot be allowed in the country based on public policy considerations. Gordon Maynard, Barbara Jackman, and Richard Kurland outline their various concerns with the bill, while Julie Taub indicates her support for the minister's attempt to deal with criminals and human rights abusers. UPDATE: Bill C-43 received royal assent on June 19.
