In Committee from the Senate of Canada
Aboriginal Peoples - June 11, 2013
Aboriginal Peoples Senators hear from a number of senior officials from Public Safety Canada as they continue their discussion of Aboriginal peoples within the criminal justice system. While Aboriginal people make up about 4 per cent of the Canadian population, Aboriginal offenders account for 23 per cent of the federal inmate population. Shawn Tupper, Daniel Sansfaçon, Kimberly Lavoie and Annie Leblanc outline their department's youth and crime prevention programs to try to keep people out of the system. The witnesses also discuss initiatives to reintegrate Aboriginal people back into the community once they leave the prison system.
