The committee begins its study on the importance of bees and bee health in the production of honey, food and seed in Canada. The honey industry recorded sales of $173 million in 2012. Senators will examine issues such as the importance of pollinators in agriculture and actions that could be taken to protect them. Rod Scarlett, executive director of the Canadian Honey Council, testifies. The Council is the national organization of the beekeeping industry and represents over 7,000 beekeepers. (December 5, 2013)
