Senators proceed to study Bill C-9, an Act respecting the election of chiefs and councillors of certain First Nations. The committee hears from the Department of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada’s Brenda Kustra who provides an overview of the bill and the Department of Justice Canada’s Tom Vincent who discusses Bill C-9’s legal jurisdiction. Also testifying are representatives from the Canadian Bar Association, Aimée Craft and Gaylene Schellenberg, who offer recommendations to the committee and go over constitutional self-governance rights.
