The committee begins its pre-study of the budget bill (C-31). During the first part of the meeting, assistant deputy minister of the public law sector for Justice Canada, Laurie Wright, and her colleague, senior counsel of judicial affairs, Catherine McKinnon discuss the proposed amendment to the Judges Act which would increase the number of judges of the Superior Court of Quebec and the Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta. Fred Headon, the president of the Canadian Bar Association, and the organization’s director of legislation and law reform, Tamra Thomson add to the discussion during the second segment of the hearing. (May 7, 2014) UPDATE: Bill C-31 received royal assent on June 19.
