The Senators wrap up their pre-study of the budget implementation bill (Bill C-31). Forming the first panel of witnesses are the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers’ Bob Bleaney and Paul Barnes who speak on the bill’s measure to eliminate tariffs on items related to mobile offshore drilling units used in oil and gas exploration and development. The second panel includes Rob Cunningham, the Canadian Cancer Society, Manuel Arango, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, and Dr. Chris Milburn, the Canadian Medical Association. The witnesses support the bill’s measure to increase tobacco taxes as a measure to prevent smoking, especially among the youth. (May 15, 2014) UPDATE: Bill C-31 received royal assent on June 19.
