In Committee from the Senate of Canada
Legal and Constitutional Affairs - June 16, 2014
Government House Leader Peter Van Loan outlines Bill C-37, which would change the names of 30 electoral districts in Quebec, Ontario, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia. It would also amend the Electoral Boundaries Readjustment Act to change the name of the electoral district of the Northwest Territories. Chief Electoral Officer Marc Mayrand informs the committee that the bill’s provisions will not create any issues for his office and that they will be implemented as part of Elections Canada’s preparation for the 2015 federal election. He also comments on the administrative implications of changing names after redistribution is completed. The committee moves to clause-by-clause consideration of the bill after hearing from the two witnesses. (June 16, 2014) UPDATE: Bill C-37 received royal assent on June 19.
