In Committee from the Senate of Canada
Aboriginal Peoples - September 24, 2014
Conservative MP Rob Clarke discusses his private member's bill (C-428) to repeal sections of the Indian Act. He is a member of the Muskeg Lake Cree First Nation and represents the riding with the second largest First Nations population in Canada. The bill's measures include increasing the power of bands to pass bylaws, removing all references to residential schools, and changing the laws restricting the sale of produce grown on First Nations lands to individuals off-reserve. Senators also hear from Doreen Rabbit and Wallace Manyfingers, who are both representing the Board of St. Kateri Catholic School. These witnesses are following up on a petition for the Senate to do a treaty study with First Nations on education. (September 24, 2014)
