In Committee from the Senate of Canada
Human Rights - December 8, 2014 - Part 1
Senators continue their review of the government's proposed zero tolerance for barbaric cultural practices act. Bill S-7 would make polygamy a new ground for refusing entry or the right to stay in Canada, establish 16 to be the national minimum age of marriage, limit the use of provocation as a defence in so-called honour killings, and create new measures to crack down on forced and underage marriages. In the first panel, Hannana Siddiqui appears as an individual via videoconference to discuss the U.K’s experience in trying to tackle polygamy and forced marriage. Deepa Mattoo (South Asian Legal Clinic of Ontario), Dr. Naila Butt (Social Services Network), Megan Walker (London Abused Women’s Centre), and Avvy Yao Yao Go (Metro Toronto Chinese & Southeast Asian Legal Clinic) offer their experience during the second panel with the issue within Canada.
