In Committee from the Senate of Canada
Legal and Constitutional Affairs - December 11, 2014
Union representatives are among the witnesses as the committee continues its review of Bill C-525. Conservative MP Blaine Calkins’ private member’s bill proposes to change the rules of certification and decertification for federally-regulated public service unions. John Mortimer, president of the Canadian LabourWatch Association, Chris Aylward and Shannon Blatt, respectively the national executive vice-president and the legal officer for the Public Service Alliance of Canada, and Chris Roberts, director of the Canadian Labour Congress’ social and economic policy department, testify during the first part of the meeting. Senators then hear from Sara Slinn, a labour law and industrial relations professor at Osgoode Hall Law School, Larry Seiferling, a labour and employment lawyer based in Saskatchewan, and Charles Philippe Rochon, a deputy director in the labour program at Employment and Social Development Canada. The committee begins its clause-by-clause consideration of the bill after hearing from the witnesses. Sylvie Guilbert, executive director of the Public Service Labour Relations and Employment Board, provides answers to technical questions. (December 11, 2014)
