The committee continues its hearings on the Agricultural Growth Act. Bill C-18 proposes to update and streamline numerous federal agricultural statutes, some of which have not been changed in over 60 years. Humphrey Banack, the vice-president of the Canadian Federation of Agriculture, along with the Canadian Seed Trade Association’s CEO Patty Townsend, and CropLife Canada’s vice president of government affairs Dennis Prouse express their support for the Act, specifically the plant breeders rights legislation aspects of the bill. Dave Solverson, the president of the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association, and the organization’s manager of federal provincial relations Ryder Lee, along with Jan Dyer the director of government relations for the Canadian Canola Growers Association and professor Richard Gray from the University of Saskatchewan express further support for the bill, but do address some concern over the administrative monetary penalties act and how it will be implemented.
