In Committee from the Senate of Canada
Transport and Communications - June 16, 2015
Transport Minister Lisa Raitt and Conservative MP Joyce Bateman discuss legislation related to railway safety. The minister responds to questions about the Safe and Accountable Rail Act. Bill C-52 aims to strengthen the liability and compensation regime to ensure railways and shippers are held accountable in the event of a railway accident. Department officials Laureen Kinney (acting assistant deputy minister, safety and security) and Alain Langlois (general counsel and associate head) also testify. Bateman presents her private member's bill (C-627) during the second hour of the meeting. The proposed amendments would empower the transport minister and railway safety inspectors to intervene and better ensure the safety of Canadian citizens, their property and communities. (June 16, 2015) UPDATE: Bill C-52 received royal assent on June 18.
