National Defence - May 16, 2016 - Part 2
The committee continues its review of Bill S-205. Senate Liberal Wilfred Moore's bill calls for the appointment of an inspector general to provide independent oversight of the Canada Border Services Agency. Senators first hear from Marie-Claude Landry, chief commissioner of the Canadian Human Rights Commission, and Ian McPhail, chair of the Civilian Review and Complaints Commission for the RCMP. Fiona Keith (counsel, Canadian Human Rights Commission) also testifies, along with CRCC directors Joanne Gibb and Richard Evans. The second panel is made of the following witnesses: Canadian Council for Refugees representatives Janet Dench and Jenny Jeanes (respectively the executive director and co-chair of the Inland Protection Working Group); Sukanya Pillay (general counsel and executive director, Canadian Civil Liberties Association); immigration lawyer Julie Taub; and Lorne Waldman (president, Canadian Association of Refugee Lawyers).
