In Committee from the Senate of Canada
Aboriginal Peoples - November 22, 2016
Senators begin their study of legislation to eliminate sex-based inequities in Indian registration. Bill S-3 is the government's response to the court decision in the Descheneaux case. The Superior Court of Quebec ruled in 2015 that provisions in the Indian Act discriminated against women on the issue of Indian status. Senior Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada officials Joëlle Montminy, Candice St-Aubin, and Nathalie Nepton, as well as Martin Reiher from the Department of Justice, provide details of the bill. Stéphane Descheneaux and Tammy Yantha, two of the plaintiffs in the Descheneaux case, and their lawyer David Schulze testify during the second part of the meeting. (November 22, 2016)
