Senate Liberal Lillian Eva Dyck presents her bill to toughen penalties for violent offences against aboriginal women. Bill S-215 amends the Criminal Code to make it an aggravating circumstance for sentencing if the victim of an assault or murder is an aboriginal woman or girl. The bill would only apply to certain violent offences. Heather Bear (Fourth Vice Chief of the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations), Francyne Joe (president of the Native Women’s Association of Canada (NWAC)), and Marilee Nowgesic (NWAC special advisor and liaison) testify alongside the senator. The following lawyers share their viewpoints on the bill during the second part of the meeting: Solomon Friedman (criminal defence lawyer and partner, Edelson Clifford D'Angelo Friedman LLP), Edward Prutschi (partner, Adler Bytensky Prutschi Shikhman LLP) and William Trudell (chair, Canadian Council of Criminal Defence Lawyers).
