The committee begins its pre-study of the budget implementation bill. Three panels of witnesses discuss various health-related elements of Part 4 of Bill C-44.

Alan Bernstein (president and CEO, Canadian Institute for Advanced Research, CIFAR) and Alison McDermott (director general, Science and Innovation Sector, Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada) discuss Division 5. The budget proposes to provide $125 million to launch the Pan-Canadian Artificial Intelligence Strategy, delivered through CIFAR.

Senior Health Canada officials Ed Morgan, Deryck Trehearne, David Lee, and Naira Minto-Saaed comment on Division 16, which amends the Food and Drugs Act.

Declan Hamill (vice-president, legal, regulatory and policy, Innovative Medicines Canada) and Jim Keon (president, Canadian Generic Pharmaceutical Association) also discuss Division 16. (May 18, 2017)
