In Committee from the House of Commons
Government Operations and Estimates
Government Operations and Estimates (October 19, 2010) Don Head, commissioner of the Correctional Service Canada, discussed what impact the government's freeze on departmental budgets will have on the daily operations of the service. Ward Elcock, the security coordinator for this summer's G8 and G20 summits, and Peter McGovern, the head of summit preparations, defended the cost of holding the two summits. Elcock testified that although the final security numbers are not in, it is likely that the entire $930 million that was budgeted for security was not spent. The security budget included a $55 million contingency reserve for unforeseen costs. McGovern told the committee that the summit's infamous fake lake, which cost $50,000 to build, was a "wild success". The Conservatives have been attacked for the $1.3 billion cost of the summits, which included more than $10 million for hotel accommodation, $85,000 for snacks, and over $300,000 for sunscreen and insect repellent.
