Subcommittee on Bill C-38 of the Standing Committee on Finance (May 17, 2012) Three ministers made an unannounced appearance at the sub-committee studying the proposed environmental changes contained in the budget implementation bill. Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver, Environment Minister Peter Kent and Fisheries and Oceans Minister Keith Ashfield defended the proposals to streamline the environmental review process and to make changes regarding fisheries protection. This was the first meeting of the sub-committee looking into the omnibus bill. Senior officials from the ministers' departments as well as from the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency, Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada and the Canadian Polar Commission testified during the last half hour of the meeting. UPDATE: Bill C-38 received royal assent on June 29.
