Special Cooperatives (July 27, 2012)

Senior board members from various cooperative federations were among those who testified as the committee continued its study of cooperatives in Canada.

Merv Rockel and Dan Astner, who were both representing the Alberta Federation of Rural Electrification Associations, and Robert Marshall from Mountain View Credit Union Limited spoke about their respective organizations and recommended ways to further support cooperative businesses in the first part of the meeting.

Bob Nelson from United Farmers of Alberta, Hazel Corcoran and Peter Hough from the Canadian Worker Co-operative Federation, and Vera Goussaert from the Manitoba Cooperative Association presented their views and elaborated on the challenges facing cooperatives for the remainder of the session.

The United Nations General Assembly named 2012 the International Year of Cooperatives and has encouraged member states to promote the associations as a means of social and economic development.
