The committee hears from two panels as it continues its study of the budget implementation act (C-31). The first panel is made up of tax lawyers Stéphane Eljarrat and Mark Tonkovich, Beatrice Keleher Raffoul from the Association of Canadian Academic Healthcare Organizations and Canadian Healthcare Association, Carole Presseault with the Certified General Accountants Association of Canada, and Harry Blackmore from the Search and Rescue Volunteer Association of Canada. The witnesses discuss measures including the GST/HST exemption for hospital parking and the introduction of the search and rescue volunteers tax credit. In the second panel, Pamela Fralick of the Canadian Cancer Society, Dennis Howlett from Canadians for Tax Fairness, Thomas J. Hayes with GrowthWorks Atlantic Ltd., and University of Victoria professor Lindsay Tedds address provisions including a tobacco tax increase and the implementation of measures aimed to go after tax cheats.
