In Committee from the House of Commons - Foreign Affairs and International Development - March 10, 2015

Christoph Benn, director of external relations for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, and Svend Robinson, the Fund’s senior advisor of parliamentary relations, provide an update on the Fund’s activities and on what has been achieved through the support from Canada and other international partners.

MPs then turn their attention to the democracy movement in Hong Kong. Veteran pro-democracy activist Martin Lee and Canada-Hong Kong Link director Gloria Fung describe the struggle and importance of protecting the city’s democracy and autonomy. Activists are protesting China’s decision to vet candidates for Hong Kong’s first direct election of its next leader, scheduled to take place in 2017. The city was disrupted by mass protests for more than two months last fall. (March 10, 2015)
