Public Safety Minister Steven Blaney discusses the government’s legislation to change the firearm licensing system. Bill C-42 was scheduled to be debated on October 22, the day of the shootings in Ottawa.
Measures include easing restrictions on transporting restricted and prohibited firearms, giving the federal cabinet power to classify guns, prohibiting people convicted of domestic violence from legally owning guns, and making firearms safety courses mandatory for first-time gun owners.
Senior department officials Kathy Thompson, Julie Besner and Lyndon Murdock also respond to questions. (April 23, 2015) UPDATE: Bill C-42 received royal assent on June 18.
