Assembly of First Nations national chief Perry Bellegarde testifies as part of the committee's pre-study of legislation to eliminate sex-based inequities in Indian registration. Bill S-3 is the government's response to the court decision in Descheneaux v. Canada. The Superior Court of Quebec ruled in 2015 that provisions in the Indian Act discriminated against women on the issue of Indian status. MPs also hear from the following witnesses: Denise Stonefish (Deputy Grand Chief, Association of Iroquois and Allied Indians, AFN); Francyne Joe (president) and Marilee Nowgesic (special advisor) from the Native Women's Association of Canada; Viviane Michel (president of Quebec Native Women Inc.); Jeannette Corbiere Lavell (citizenship commissioner, Anishinabek Nation, Union of Ontario Indians) and Robert Bertrand (national chief) and Frankie Coté (senior manager, engagement) from the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples.
