Status of Women - April 13, 2017
The committee hears from two panels as it continues its review of Bill C-337. Interim Conservative Leader Rona Ambrose's bill would make sexual assault law training mandatory for new judges. She tabled the Judicial Accountability through Sexual Assault Law Training Act, or The JUST Act, in February. The following witnesses testify during the first panel: Canadian Centre for Gender and Sexual Diversity representatives Katerina Frost (government affairs coordinator) and Jeremy Dias (executive director); Nneka MacGregor (executive director) and Mandi Gray (sexual violence coordinator), both with WomenatthecentrE; Bonnie Brayton (national executive director, DisAbled Women's Network Canada); and Jackie Stevens (executive director, Avalon Sexual Assault Centre). The second panel is made up of Francyne Joe (president, Native Women's Association of Canada); Tracy Porteous (executive director, Ending Violence Association of British Columbia); Lise Martin (executive director, Women's Shelters Canada); Marlihan Lopez (liaison officer, Regroupement québécois des Centres d'aide et de lutte contre les agressions à caractère sexuel); and Chad Kicknosway (senior advisor on justice and human rights, Native Women's Association of Canada).
