The Oliphant Inquiry – October 2, 2008

Commission of Inquiry into Certain Allegations Respecting Business and Financial Dealings Between Karlheinz Schreiber and the Right Honourable Brian Mulroney

On the first day of public hearings, Commissioner Jeffrey Oliphant makes opening remarks addressing the Commission’s terms of reference. The Commission hears applications for standing and funding for the first part of the public inquiry, a factual investigation of alleged business dealings between Mr. Schreiber and Mr. Mulroney. Applications for standing are made by Guy Pratte on behalf of Mr. Mulroney, Richard Auger on behalf of Mr. Schreiber, Paul Vickery on behalf of the Attorney General of Canada, Robert Houston on behalf of Fred Doucet, Jasmin Lefebvre on behalf of the Bloc Québécois, Pierre Gauthier, and Yohan Cherrier. The Commissioner grants full standing to Mr. Mulroney, Mr. Schreiber, the Attorney General of Canada, and Mr. Doucet. Mr. Pratte makes a submission opposing the granting of intervener standing to the Bloc Québécois and the Commissioner reserves his decision.
