The Oliphant Inquiry – March 30, 2009 (Part 2 of 2)

Commission of Inquiry into Certain Allegations Respecting Business and Financial Dealings Between Karlheinz Schreiber and the Right Honourable Brian Mulroney

Witness: Marc Lalonde

Following a dispute amongst counsel concerning the disclosure of documents, the Commission hears testimony from Marc Lalonde (a former federal cabinet minister and lobbyist for Mr. Schreiber). Under examination by Commission Counsel Giuseppe Battista, Mr. Lalonde describes his relationship with Mr. Schreiber, his work as a lobbyist for Bear Head Industries and Thyssen beginning in 1993, and Thyssen’s attempts to build a manufacturing plant in Canada for military vehicles to be sold domestically and internationally. Guy Pratte (Counsel for Mr. Mulroney) cross-examines the witness, focusing on Thyssen’s efforts to establish an international market for its proposed Canadian-built military vehicles. There are also brief cross-examinations by Richard Auger (Counsel for Mr. Schreiber) and Michel Décary (Counsel for Mr. Lalonde).
