Inquiries on CPAC - The Oliphant Inquiry – March 31, 2009
Commission of Inquiry into Certain Allegations Respecting Business and Financial Dealings Between Karlheinz Schreiber and the Right Honourable Brian Mulroney
Witnesses: Elizabeth Moores, Derek Burney
Commission Counsel Evan Roitenberg conducts examination of Elizabeth Moores (the widow of Frank Moores, a former premier of Newfoundland and Labrador), with questions focusing on Mr. Moores’s relationships with Mr. Mulroney and Mr. Schreiber and on the existence of a Swiss bank account opened in Mrs. Moores’s name. Following a brief cross-examination by Robert Houston (Counsel for Fred Doucet), Paul Vickery (on behalf of the Attorney General of Canada) asks Mrs. Moores about money allegedly paid to Mr. Moores by Mr. Schreiber’s company Bitucan Holdings. Mr. Roitenberg proceeds with examination of Derek Burney (Mr. Mulroney’s former chief of staff), asking him about uncertainty within Mr. Mulroney’s cabinet concerning a proposed contract with Bear Head Industries for military vehicles, about his own role as a mediator, and about the signing of an “understanding in principle” between Bear Head and the federal government in September 1988. Guy Pratte (Counsel for Mr. Mulroney) conducts a brief cross-examination.
